About GASFREE: the devices and screenshots
Mouse
- Knobs, sliders: drag up / down (Shift: fine). Double-click: the default. The wheel over a knob turns it (Options can turn that off; Ctrl + wheel always turns it).
- Hovering a knob lights the sockets that modulate it.
- Pads: hold the button down and slide across them to play each one you pass over.
- Cables: drag from a jack to another. Drag a cable off an input to move or remove it. Shift + drag a jack that has cables to move them all (both ends work, outputs too) to another jack of the same kind; dropped elsewhere, they stay. Double-click or right-click a jack to unplug it.
- Scrolling: the wheel off the knobs scrolls the rack (Shift + wheel: sideways); drag the rack's sides or the scrollbars. Zoom with − / + in the toolbar.
- Devices: the buttons on a device's right side move it up / down or remove it; the chevron on its top left folds it.
Keyboard
- Space: play / stop every synth. Tab: the rack's back (the audio and MIDI cables).
- The device in the middle of the screen (a yellow line on its left) gets its buttons on the keys, the most used first, laid out as on the panel. Hold Shift to see which key is which; ` switches banks on devices with many buttons.
- QWERTY (keys device): the letters play notes, Z / X change the octave, and the devices' key shortcuts are off (Space and Tab still work).
MIDI
- Choose the MIDI input in the keys device. Synths get their notes through MASTER MIDI or a cable on the back, on the channel set there.
- Pitch bend, the mod wheel (CC 1), aftertouch (channel and per note) and the sustain pedal (CC 64) reach the synths too; the MYSTIC's mod matrix can use the mod wheel and aftertouch.
- MIDI learn (Options): click a knob, fader or button, then move a controller (or press a key / pad) to map it. The mappings are listed in Options, each with a button to remove it; they are saved with the rack.
CPU
- CPU next to Audio on: how much of the real time the audio engine needs (twice a second). Amber over 60%, red over 85%; near 100% the sound breaks up. Removing heavy devices (polyphonic synths, reverbs, granular effects) lowers it.
Patches and sessions
- Sessions save themselves in this browser as you play; the last one opens with the site (Options can turn that off). Save as… keeps a patch; Export downloads it (Shift + Export: copies it to the clipboard); Import loads one.
- Randomize gives every synth a random sound. Add device lists everything you can insert.
CRATE 60
- A pad sampler: drop audio files on its pads to load them, or press SAMPLE RECORD to record the rear IN L / R. The MODE keys open the screen's pages; click a field and turn DATA (or drag the field). SHIFT, then a key: the function printed under it. SEQ RECORD, then PLAY, records what you play on the pads (TIMING CORRECT, SWING); SHIFT + SEQ is STEP EDIT; CHOP and TRIM cut a sample onto several pads. K1-K3 set the selected pad's TUNE, CUTOFF and DECAY.
MYSTIC
- MODULE SELECT picks what the 8 encoders of MASTER CONTROL edit; PAGE ▲ ▼ goes through its pages, then to the next module. HOME has the 8 macros, MACRO ASSIGN sets what each one moves, MOD MATRIX has 16 slots of source, destination and depth. SHIFT + LATCH is SUSTAIN, SHIFT + ◀ ▶ moves 10 patches.
MESIAH-6
- 0-9 load a program; BANK or TENS, then a number, change those digits (bank 1: the user programs). WRITE, then a number, saves the sound in 100-109. After GLIDE, UNISON, KEY MODE, P WHL RANGE or GLOBALS, BANK / TENS step their value. Hold a chord and press UNISON: chord memory. SEQUENCER: RECORD, then play notes (TENS: a rest, or a tie with keys down; BANK: back a step), then PLAY.
CSS 90
- The coloured buttons load one of the 22 preset voices into the sliders; STORE, then MEMORY 1-4, keeps the panel there (saved with the rack). Each voice plays CHANNEL I and CHANNEL II together (BALANCE mixes them, DETUNE moves II). The filter envelope goes from IL to AL in A, to the sliders' cutoff in D, and back to IL in R. Press the ribbon anywhere and slide: up to an octave each way. Aftertouch per note (or channel pressure) moves the TOUCH RESPONSE AFTER sliders.
MINIMAD
- Its keyboard plays it: touch a key lower down for more pressure (the PRESS source of the matrix). In the MATRIX, click a point and drag it up or down; double-click clears it; the button over an ASSIGN column changes what it moves. SHIFT gives the controls their blue function: SHIFT + ARP is the sequencer, SHIFT + ● records, SHIFT + ▶ plays. PRESET steps through its sounds; SAVE keeps one.
MIDI FX
- ADD DEVICE › Modulation › MIDI FX: effects on the notes before they reach a synth. It goes between the keys and the last synth (Tab shows the MIDI cables: its MIDI OUT into the synth's MIDI IN). TIMING (to a grid, CHANCE), PITCH (TRANSPOSE, HARMONY, SCALE), ARP, ECHO (repeats, rising or falling with PITCH), VELOCITY.
Synth Editor
- ADD DEVICE › Custom › CUSTOM SYNTH: build your own synth. Design its FRONT PANEL (knobs, sliders, buttons, LEDs, LED bars, meters, jacks, lines, rectangles: drag them from the palette) and its BACK PANEL (audio sockets), then wire what is INSIDE (oscillators, filters, envelopes, LFOs, sequencers, effects). The ✎ on its left ear opens the editor again; Save to My synths keeps the design.
The song sequencer
- The bar at the bottom: raise it with SEQUENCER. Tracks on MIDI channels, a piano roll (click to add a note, drag empty space to select notes, drag notes to move them, drag a note's end to lengthen the selection, right-click or Delete to remove). Each track's ⋮ menu copies, pastes, deletes and reorders it; double-click a name to rename it. MIDI FILE loads a .mid file (from the library or your own; you can also drop one on the page) and replaces the song with it. ⇱ WINDOW detaches it into its own window (closing it brings it back). CV tracks: knobs turned while recording (REC, playing) are recorded and played back; + CV makes one for the next knob touched; EXPORT WAV records the song played once (in real time) as a WAV file, REC from the keys, LOOP, BPM, BARS, GRID, SYNC (MIDI clock).
